How to deal with hot flashes

Hot flashes!  They can be the absolute worst.

But they don’t have to be.

There are things that we can do to make them less bothersome.

  • Dress in layers.  I know this sounds basic, but having a layer to remove can be tremendously helpful when a hot flash starts.

  • Wear light fitting and breathable clothes.  The cooler we are, the less bothersome a hot flash will be.

  • Carry a portable fan with you (or have a fan available by your bed, couch, or desk).

  • Eat a healthy, well-balanced diet.

  • Exercise regularly.

  • Stay hydrated.

  • Engage in mindfulness and breathing exercises

  • Do yoga!

  • Lose weight, if you are overweight or obese.

  • Find a cognitive behavioral therapist who has expertise in working with peri- and postmenopausal women.

  • Try clinical hypnosis

  • Acupuncture

  • Avoid well-known triggers: alcohol, spicy foods, and caffeine

Some of these tips and tricks will be more helpful than others (and easier than others).  If you truly feel you are suffering, please reach out to a women’s health practitioner who can suggest medications and supplements.  There is no need to go this alone!
